Silicone-free shampoo - what really happens when we switch over to using one
14 January 2022
Are you accustomed to using a shampoo with silicones and want to switch to silicone-free shampoo? Then you should know what a switchover entails. Here you will find out how your hair could be affected.
What purpose do silicones have in a shampoo?
Simply put, silicones are colorless plastics that are predominantly derived from petroleum. They serve as film formers in hair care and other beauty products. They form a protective coating around the hair and provide an even hair surface. "Filling up" the porous areas on the hair with silicones enhances shine and aids with combability. Sounds good so far?
Unfortunately, silicones do not have a lasting care effect on your hair.
Clean Beauty Shampoos, on the contrary, rely on the use of oils, proteins and vitamins. These can penetrate the hair easier without the need of silicones and have a lasting care effect.

How to recognize silicones
Not sure if your shampoo contains silicones? Detecting silicones is not always easy, but with a little know-how you can find out by yourself.
Check the ingredient list of your hair care products. Silicones must be listed on cosmetic products. Now it's just a matter of recognizing the corresponding designations of the various types of silicone.
Dimeticone
Dimethicone Copolyo
Cetyl Dimethicone
Amodimethicone
Methicone
Cyclomethicone
Polysiloxane
Cyclopentasiloxane
To make it a bit simpler and easier to remember: All ingredients that end in "-cone" or "-oxane" are silicones. If this is not the case, your shampoo is certainly silicone-free.

This is what may happen when you switch to hair care without silicones
If you use a shampoo with silicones and want to switch to a silicone-free product, you will have a short adjustment period.
This lasts on average about two to three weeks or 6-9 hair washes. During this phase, the built up silicone layer will slowly wash out, resulting in a different hair feeling. Hair that appears dryer and is more difficult to comb is not uncommon during the changeover phase.
To speed up the changeover, it is worthwhile:
1. Pre-cleanse the hair with a deep cleansing shampoo. (Your hairdresser will be happy to do this for you).
2. Change your entire hair care routine to silicone-free. This way you will not be rebuilding the coating over and over again.

This is what awaits you after the change
Now it's time to persevere, it's worth it!
Once all silicone residues are removed, you can expect shiny hair with lots of volume. The drying time of your hair will be shorter, stylings can be done with less heat and will last much longer.
Your scalp will also get used to the new shampoo. At the beginning your scalp may become oily more quickly, as it is used to an artificial "coating". This will regulate and you will say goodbye to quickly greasy roots.
