Beautiful hair overnight – 5 tips on how to transform your hair while sleeping

23 June 2024
Who doesn't dream of beautiful hair overnight? While we can't completely change the natural features of our hair, we can certainly support them. With a few clever tricks, you can move towards achieving "dream hair" – all while you sleep. Here are 5 tips to help you transform your hair overnight. Spoiler: it’s about more than just hair care!

1. Sleep with a braid

Braid your hair into a loose plait in the evening and secure it with a soft, metal-free hair tie. By tying your hair back, you reduce the risk of split ends caused by friction with your pillow. You'll wake up with soft beach waves, as the braided structure creates waves overnight without the need for heat.

Pro tip: Braid several plaits in different sizes to achieve a natural wave effect. Undo the braids in the morning and style your hair with your fingers only, not with a brush.

2. Tie long hair into an overnight bun

Do braids bother you when you sleep? Then this overnight technique is perfect for you: twist your hair at the top of your head and secure it like a snail. This happens naturally when you twist it. Then, secure the bun with a soft, metal-free hair tie. It's important to tie the bun loosely and not scrunch the hair up.
The effect? You protect your hair from friction and, therefore, from split ends while you sleep. In the morning, you can expect great waves in your hair.

3. Tie a silk scarf around your head and go to bed

Did you just think of Widow Bolte by Wilhelm Busch? Trust us, sleeping with a silk scarf covering your hair A) doesn’t have to look old-fashioned (there are such great scarves!) and B) has a brilliant protective effect on your hair.

If your pillowcase is made of cotton, your hair is at risk of rubbing a lot when you sleep, which can lead to split ends. Cotton also absorbs moisture from the hair. A silk scarf for sleeping also protects your styling.

This method is great especially for straight hair.

Pro tip: Brush your hair and tie the silk scarf around it before sleeping
. In the morning, your hair will be smooth and have extra volume thanks to the wrap.

Do you have curly hair? Then it’s worth wearing a silk scarf at night to protect your curls and prevent them from lying flat while you sleep.

4. Don’t leave hair treatment on overnight

Using a hair treatment overnight is rarely a good idea. The usual application time for hair treatments and masks is 5-15, maximum 20 minutes. In addition to moisturizing active ingredients, they often contain proteins. Leaving a hair mask on overnight can lead to hardening of the hair (due to excess protein) and cause hair breakage rather than providing care.

5. Leave hair oil on overnight

The trick here is to use the hair oil as a pre-treatment. The gentle active ingredients of a hair oil do not harden but instead moisturize and soften the hair.

Pro tip: Work the hair oil into your entire hair in the evening. Use slightly more than you normally would for styling. Brush your hair thoroughly and gently tie it up (see tips 1 and 2). In the morning, wash your hair as usual with shampoo and conditioner.

You see, beautiful hair overnight is not witchcraft. With our simple tips, you too can achieve beautiful hair while you sleep.
